AI disclosure guide for KDP

Amazon requires AI-content disclosure. Here's exactly what to do, what to paste, and why it protects your account.

What Amazon requires

Since September 2023, KDP requires authors to disclose AI-assisted or AI-generated content during the publishing process. This applies to both text and images (including covers).

There are two categories:

  • AI-assisted. you used AI to help ideate, brainstorm, or edit, but you substantially created or modified the content yourself.
  • AI-generated. the content was generated by AI, even if you edited or curated the output afterward.

Ghostwright output falls under AI-generated for both text and cover art. This is straightforward to disclose and does not prevent publication.

What to paste in KDP

During the KDP upload process, you'll see an "AI-generated content" question. Select "Yes" and paste the following:

The text of this book was generated using AI (large language model), with creative direction provided by the author through a detailed brief covering characters, setting, plot structure, voice, and thematic elements. The author reviewed and approved the generated content prior to publication.

The cover image was generated using AI (image generation model) based on specifications derived from the book's content.

This text is included in every Ghostwright delivery package.

Your book's copyright page

Add a disclosure line to your copyright page (the page after the title page). Something like:

This work was created with the assistance of artificial intelligence. The author provided creative direction and editorial oversight.

This isn't strictly required by Amazon, but it's good practice and demonstrates transparency to readers.

Common questions

Does Amazon ban AI-generated books?

No. Amazon allows AI-generated content as long as it's properly disclosed. What they prohibit is undisclosed AI content, and mass-uploading low-quality spam. A single, properly disclosed, quality book is completely fine.

Can I still use KDP Select?

Yes. AI-generated books are eligible for KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited as long as they meet the standard content guidelines and are properly disclosed.

Will readers know it's AI-generated?

The KDP disclosure is visible to Amazon internally but is not displayed on your book's product page. The copyright page disclosure is visible to readers who look for it. Most readers don't check copyright pages.

What if Amazon changes the rules?
